My Health Journey

Health has become one of the most important aspects of my life since I was young. However, it came more to the forefront during and after the pandemic - a time period that highlighted just how unhealthy our country is. I grew up in an environment that didn’t necessarily focus on healthy eating. I grew up in a meat, potatoes, and beer family, where meals were usually rich and hearty. There was more focus on how to make a quick and fast meal versus the nutrition value of the meal.
When I moved out to LA, I started focusing more and more on my overall health. I discovered that I had leaky gut, and went on an extreme elimination diet to fix it. Through that process, I began reading more and more books about longevity, holistic health, and nutrition. I wanted to learn as much as I could to help achieve my health goals, which are really just to live the healthiest life that I possibly could. Here are some of my favorites:
Food Fix - Dr. Mark Hyman
Lifespan: Why We Age-and Why We Don’t Have To - David A. Sinclair
Why We Sleep - Matthew Walker, PhD
Prior to the start of the pandemic, I became YTT 500 certified. Though I will say, in recent years I’ve fallen off the yoga train. I’ve been more focused on HIIT training and running. In recent years, I started running races (I hadn’t run by choice since high school). Running races has given me that desired structure that I was missing. I’d set a schedule, and do everything I could to stick to it. The races themselves are vibrant. There’s a different type of vibe that occurs when thousands of people are competing in the same event. I’m signed up for two more events this year, and potentially more on the way.
I’ve also been focused on staying hydrated due to the workouts that I do. During the pandemic, I would often do two-a-days but soon became burnt out after running a half marathon. I didn’t run again for almost six months. Now, I stick to one workout each day, usually with no days off. I’ve found that for my body, I need to stay active to quell my anxiety. I also have a dog, which forces me to get outside more often.
My health journey is an ever-evolving experience. At times, it’s been exhausting. Other times are more enjoyable. I love trying different workouts, and visiting different studios. The most rewarding experience has been getting to know myself on a different level. I’ve been pushed to my physical limits, have thought about quitting so many times. But I keep getting back up because I’m on a mission to live the healthiest life that I can. I’m living life to the fullest, and having fun while doing it.
